ONE MILE RADIUS:
"After one year of writing professionally certain truths have revealed themselves to me- Los Angeles is a city within a city. An umbilical cord vaguely connects one area to the next and names bleed into other names like exits on the freeway. I have measured this year by the smell of paint and the artists who lent me their voices and opened a window into another world. In my reportage I realized that there is an inextricable connection that binds the artist to their studio space. This relationship is mainly unseen and often unknown.
Garet Field Sells conceived “1 Mile Radius” as a way to photograph the impression the artist has on their immediate environment without ever revealing their work. Together we traveled every corner on the city on the weekends- from Chinatown to the Venice Canals to Pasadena to Downtown- photographing within one mile of the artist’s studio."
